We come home and are just happy to sit down here and chill for an hour
Teena was a bit reluctant at first when the real estate agent showed the Mylers a steeply sloping block in the bush just outside Inverell.
But with encouragement from her husband Ron and the enthusiasm of their chosen builder David Reid Homes, she has not regretted building their dream home with the wonderful views over the distant ranges.
Ten minutes from town they are now living in a stylish retreat they love returning to after a busy day’s work. “We come home and are just happy to sit down here and chill for an hour. It’s a 10-minute drive so there’s time to let go of the day’s stress. Once you get here you’re right,” says Ron.
Teena and Ron are well known Inverell locals. Ron previously worked as an electrician for 15 years at Wilks Electrical and Teena worked in the State Bank and then the New England Credit Union for 10 or so years. They now run the popular MacIntyre Hot Bread Shop, having bought the business in 1999 from Ron’s father who established the shop 30 years ago.
The couple have built up a thriving bakery business and Teena runs the ‘smoko van’ servicing the industrial area five days a week and local sporting and other events on the weekends. “We started in the bakery with three cooks and two staff, we now have six cooks and 15 staff altogether… so it’s growing,” says Ron.
Teena’s other interest is scrapbooking. She became a consultant six years ago and sells scrapbooking products as well. “I have the space here to hold classes and workshops so all the ladies come out and use my tools.” The couple are both very busy.
This is the third house they have built and the Mylers knew what they wanted, a bush block larger than two acres that you have to mow every weekend. “Eight acres is just big enough to only have a house block to look after and leave the rest scrub. In 2010 there were no houses out here and only a dirt track.” They enlisted the assistance of friends Kylie and Dan Wilks from David Reid Homes, with extensive experience building on a sloping block.
The sloping block was not a problem for David Reid Homes
“We couldn’t see how anything could be done as it was quite a steep sloping block. We did three cuts and filled where the shed is, and down here,” says Ron. “Dan was really hands on. He helped us pick the best aspect. He brought out Blakey, his architect, and we all put our heads together.”
What an achievement! Walking through the front door into the open plan living area is ‘wow’. High ceilings and large sliding doors overlooking the 12-metre pool and distant ranges enhance the sense of space. The skylight above the stairwell leading to a large downstairs rumpus room and Teena’s office and scrapbooking workroom adds even more light.
The house is functional and practical and very down to earth. Teena wanted the interior to be fairly simple. White walls work well with the rock feature pillars at the entrance. She chose the green-tiled splashback in the kitchen and a big slab of Caesarstone for the bench tops. The open plan interior with large 10-metre wide sliding glass doors opening onto the balcony feels like living outdoors.
“The floor to ceiling doors are open nine months of the year,” says Ron. “We have lots of barbeques with friends and family and really enjoy sharing the relaxing views.” The earthiness of the interior is enhanced by the polished concrete floors on both levels. Teena loves how versatile and easily cleaned they are. “It’s different, it has quite an industrial feel to it. We wanted the really shiny gloss. We wanted the wow factor,” says Teena.
“There’s enough space for our boys to just move the table to play handball or cricket inside.” The concrete flooring means the house is surprisingly warm during winter. “It could be five degrees outside in the middle of winter but if the sun’s shining we don’t need the gas heater till the sun goes down. If it’s overcast we turn the heater on,” comments Ron. “In summer the house is cooled by ceiling to floor louvres everywhere to enhance air flow.”
Outside the rock pillars supporting the two-storey structure are an arresting feature. Teena stumbled across the ‘rocks’ on a Melbourne website. They are hand-made out of concrete about two inches thick and put together like a jigsaw puzzle, glued on to the brick wall behind them. “The rocks are called ‘Mt Hotham’. We had no idea why till we were skiing at Mount Hotham and that’s what the rocks look like there!” laughs Teena.
“We deliberately put the garage on the first floor level and there’s no steps at the front door, so everything is accessible. As we get older it makes sense,” says Ron. This is using the sloping block to its best advantage. The Myler’s home was completed in 2010 and the garden is an ongoing process. They mulched and planted out the bank in front of the pool. “We just wanted something that was green and easy care.
It’s a whole new world up here, like floating. It’s a beautiful spot.”
Every morning we wake up and there’ll be kangaroos here. The dogs don’t worry about them now. We’ve kept the bush aspect,” says Teena. “Because the house is so high you are a part of the view, a part of the landscape. It’s a whole new world up here, like floating. It’s a beautiful spot.” The sloping block was not a problem after all.

This passive-solar-designed sustainable house in the countryside is at one with nature.
Located in a regional Northern New South Wales, this modern eco-friendly luxury home is far from your typical house. Built by Dan Wilks of David Reid Homes, creating this house was as much about building his dream home as it was about creating a structure that clearly defines what he is capable of as a David Reid luxury home builder.
The dwelling displays the best of passive-solar design and ‘green’ building. Dan is passionate about eco-friendly construction and has completed his Housing Industry Association (HIA) Greensmart Course. This beautiful home became his way of proving the theory.
Dan points out that the two most important aspects of building are orientation and insulation. Coupled with these are essential cross-flow ventilation, shading, and passive solar design for eco-friendly living.
“The orientation aspect is a classic example in our case. We have positioned our house a little northeast,” says Dan’s wife. Kylie. “This is perfect for our passive design, but our view of the town is more to the east. Most people think that’s the direction your house should face but although our house is facing the town, it doesn’t mean we don’t get to enjoy a view of it,” she explains.
The interiors are fresh and simple with a neutral theme of white, light and dark grey, complemented by browns from the timber elements. Occasional splashes of colour from furnishings and artwork.
A simple colour palette allows the texture of different materials to become the feature,” says Kylie, adding that the block walls give the house a structural grounding. The north-facing 4 m x 12 m glass doors are another stunning feature and let the tranquil bush view flow into the open style design.
The house has been custom designed to suit the family and, according to Kylie, “The design was about meeting different aspects of our life and future life. We can shut the door of the office and walk away,” says Kylie. The guest room, one of five bedrooms in the house, has its own separate access to the outside.
The Sustainable House and the Family
This sustainable house is open plan and spacious but with quiet areas, such as the library. For a family, the ease of access between the garage and indoors via a mudroom is important for making life more convenient. The positioning of the main bedroom means it has a stunning outlook of the peaceful countryside, it’s close to the living room of the house but retains privacy.
“It’s well-planned spaces like these that make large houses feel like a home.” With free reign over the kitchen design, Kylie decided to create a space with small galley areas. “It certainly doesn’t look like a conventional set-out, but it works for how we live,” she says of the kitchen layout. The kitchen has two distinct areas – one for coffee, tea and breakfast; one for preparation and cooking. The island bench brings the room together and acts as a central space for catching up, serving meals and homework.
Dan’s favourite element of this dream sustainable home is the staircase. It’s a demonstration of excellent planning and workmanship. The result is simple and stunning. The passive design of this rural luxury home includes louvre windows to assist with excellent cross-flow ventilation, hydronic in-slab heating, reverse masonry walls, solar panels, extended eaves on the north side for protection from the summer heat, and extra insulation.
The lawn is watered using a Biolytix waste management system and the western side of the house has an ornamental grapevine growing to assist in shielding the house from the sun in summer while allowing warm sunlight to penetrate during the winter when the vine’s leaves drop.
Dan designed and handmade the home’s concrete panels, which act as a heat pack. “They conduct heat when the sun is long gone and work like magic!” Says Kylie.
With its practical and stylish design, this beautiful sustainable house is energy-efficient and proof that passive eco-design is achievable. It’s no surprise then, that this stylish, contemporary family home was a finalist in the 2013 HIA northern New South Wales housing awards.

David Reid Homes Shoalhaven created this incredible hideaway for Jervis Bay home owner, Laura-Lee Chick. Laura-Lee and her family enjoyed many well-deserved breaks in their old fibro beach shack. But with five adult children and seven grandchildren, the family had outgrown their home. This project became a complete knock down rebuild for the Chicks, who still wanted to retain the comfy beach house appeal feel that they had all grown to know and love, but with more space for their ever growing family.
Watch the video below for a walk inside this Hamptons inspired home.
Shoalhaven builder David Reid built a magnificent timber home with an open plan design and enough room for all three generations to share! Included in the design are five generous bedrooms, three bathrooms and large open entertainment areas with a feature fireplace and raked ceilings. expansive decks complement restful landscaping and link the outdoors to the comforts of the interior. To add to the spacious decks, they offer incomparable views of Jervis Bay from the upper deck and a perfect year-round home, whether for entertaining or just sitting back and chilling out.
“The brief for this house was a spacious, free-flowing design with large outdoor areas,” according to David Reid. “The homeowners wanted the exterior to reflect a little bit of the Hamptons style,”.
In creating the design, David Reid worked closely with the owners in researching various beach house designs and incorporating them into this incredible project. The finished product ideally marries an element of formality with the beauty of a casual beachside holiday home. While the finish on the home includes extensive use of white and limed timber, the Jervis Bay environment brings colour, natural character and texture to the entire creation.
The addition of stone compliments the natural surroundings of the ancient volcanic rocks and beautiful golden sands of the area. Ample staircases and added seating on the decks create a relaxing and comfortable environment for the owners and their guests. Laura-Lee loves the spaciousness of the house and particularly the upper deck area.
Many of the developments that became part of the finished project were made as the build progressed. “Custom building is about changes on the run, not just building the home,” David explained. “Our aim is to get it right for the client and achieve the best outcome for them.”
Laura-Lee and her family are thrilled with the way that David has worked with them in a collaborative and understanding manner. The homes kitchen even includes a scullery! This is perfect for Laura-Lee as she is a keen entertainer of numerous guests. The entrance to the ensuite has been built to offer privacy which was one of her main requirements. These changes were seamlessly handled by David and his team as the project was under construction.
Hyams Beach presents a magnificent outlook for the home with unobstructed views while the home’s unique and tailored design brings welcome privacy and an air of seclusion. Laura-Lee sums the outcome up perfectly. “It’s just a beautiful, comfortable, easily maintained home.”
